It would be a hard job to find anyone who likes to receive cold calls. Those unexpected phone calls from perky salespeople who remain unwavering in their search for that one person who will say yes instead of no.
I’ve handled more cold calls in my life than I care to remember. Having unknowingly signed on to a recycled mobile number a few years back, I still handle never ending insurance and health care calls for the prior owner.
And having done my time in the past as office gate keeper, I’ve got plenty of experience; even being referred to as ‘The Tiger’ by past colleagues, who were both equally intimidated and impressed by my swift handling of unwanted calls for the boss.
So, what is the best way to handle a cold caller when you are not actually interested in what they are selling?
Be Polite (But Firm)
There’s no need to be rude to the person calling you. At the end of the day, they are somebody who is just trying to do a job too. At the same time, don’t be overly defensive or apologetic either. Make your point, nicely.
Stand Your Ground
Once you’ve made it clear that you are not interested in receiving the call, don’t be swayed by firm or pushy people. Showing that you are unlikely to change your mind will reduce future follow up calls.
Don’t Get Drawn In
Allowing the caller to drag you into a long conversation only makes it harder to end the call. This only wastes both theirs and your time. Control the conversation and be assertive when interjecting and ending the call.
Be upfront about the probability of the call going any further. There’s nothing wrong with flatly say that you’re not interested. Using phrases like “I’ll think about it” just to get off the phone, will guarantee a call back.
Tick The Box
When filling out forms or providing your personal details, be aware of any disclaimers attached. Your information may not only be for use by the person you are giving it to, but also sold on to third parties as well. Be careful with your details.
Find out if there is a Do Not Call register in your area and make the most of it! Although if may take a little bit of time for you to be taken off the circulation lists, it does give you the choice to block all telemarketing phone calls.
