Believe it or not, if you write down all the tasks you to need to do in a random list, you are not actually giving yourself the best chance of crossing those items off. By optimising your To Do List you will be able to complete tasks quicker and more effectively.
Let’s take a look at different ways you can help knock those tasks on the head.
Implementing a priority rule is a great way to ensure those big To Dos don’t keep building up on the sidelines. This is the secret to ticking tasks off on a daily basis.
- The 1 + 3 + 5 Rule Write down 1 big task, 3 medium tasks and 5 little tasks to do each day. Yep, 9 items. It might be hard to pick and choose, but the sense of achievement at the end of each day is worth it!
- The 3 + 2 Rule Similar to the rule above, this one is perfect for those busy days when you just can’t catch a break. Select 3 bigger items, and 2 smaller ones, that you can achieve in between all of that running around you are doing.
Eat A Live Frog Before Breakfast
Don’t worry; it’s less disgusting than it sounds!
Eat a live frog before breakfast and nothing worse will happen to you the rest of the day. ~Mark Twain
The premise is to tackle one of your big-ticket items first thing in the morning. Get that monkey off your back so you can focus on achieving everything else on your To Do List that day.
Break Big Projects Down
Split really big jobs into actionable items, and narrow down your focus. Instead of writing, “Move to Europe” on your list, try starting with “Research Visa Requirements in Germany”.
Set A Deadline
Set a deadline against each actionable task and block out time to ensure it gets done. Use your calendar to help you allocate and plan when these items will be completed… and stick to it!
Keep It Short & Simple
It doesn’t matter how or where you keep your To Do list, the main thing is that it’s in one accessible place. And to stop your list from completely overwhelming you, try limiting it to 15 items at a time.
Now stop procrastinating and start doing!
