scanner tendencies

My name is Emily, and I'm a scanner.

Not sure what that is? A scanner is someone with so many interests that they can’t choose just one to specialise in. And in my case that has sometimes meant choosing nothing at all. I’m great at starting things, but I’ll be damned if I’m going to finish any of them.

I’ve always thought there was something wrong with me, that the only thing I could commit to was being a flake. Now don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing bad about being a scanner. In fact, scanner personalities are often multi-talented and very accomplished in a variety of areas (Leonardo da Vinci, Benjamin Franklin and Stephen Fry among those more notable). Not I though.

I am one of those scanners that, with an overwhelming amount of options, ends up doing nothing at all. It's not that I haven’t ever achieved anything in life, but I have always thought that I was just biding my time until I figured out what I wanted to ‘be’. What I didn’t realise was that I had figured it out already.

I used to think that being a secretary / Executive Assistant / receptionist was just a stopgap for me. Crazy, I know. What I now realise is that (despite feeling like a scanner all of my life) I have actually been doing what I was meant to be doing all along. All those years spent working in corporate offices has led me to the one thing I feel I won’t fail to finish – being a Virtual Assistant.

And it feels good to find something that seems tailor made for me. So now that I’m a freelancer / contractor / entrepreneur / business owner / Virtual Assistant, you can call me a slashie instead…
