We’ve all been there before. You have a late night or miss a few hours sleep and suddenly you’re out of whack for the next week. But did you know that you can actually survive on less than three hours of sleep a night? That equates to about five extra hours in your day to get things done!

The key to making it possible is to understand sleep patterns. You can actually create your own sleep cycles outside of the regular day and night cues, though alternative sleep patterns don’t necessarily always mesh well with society! Let’s take a look at the most basic types of sleep patterns.

Monophasic

This is the most common sleep cycle, and what many of us are used to. It consists of one sleep cycle of about eight hours every night.

Biphasic

Not too uncommon, this sleep cycle consists of a slightly shorter sleep at night paired with a nap during the day. Our Latin friends have been taking siestas for centuries, and know that a short sleep after lunch can leave you feeling as refreshed as having had a few hours slumber.

Polyphasic

This is a more unusual pattern, which consists of multiple periods of sleep each day. The most well known combinations are:

    • Everyman – 4 hours total (a core sleep of 3 hours and 3 additional 20 minute naps)
    • Uberman – 2 hours total (a 20 minute nap every 4 hours)
    • Dymaxion – 2 hours total (a 30 minute nap every 6 hours)

There can be many advantages to adopting a Polyphasic sleep cycle; namely more hours in the day, increased quality of sleep, more energy, and even improved dream recall. However, it takes immense self-discipline, lots of planning and extreme sleep deprivation while you adjust.

But a Biphasic sleep pattern can be much more achievable. It still allows you to gain time in your day, and can also provide you with a more stable energy level.

Whatever routine you chose, just make sure you stick to it. Knowing how much sleep you need, and making sure that you get just that, is the real key to eliminating sleepiness and improving productivity. A good night’s sleep can go a long way to helping you remain energetic throughout the day.

Have you experimented with different sleep patterns? Let us know about your experience below.

On the whole we should all be doing more exercise, right? Being fit and healthy reduces stress, boosts your immune system and helps you sleep better. So the importance of keeping fit as a business owner is huge. But fitting exercise in, especially when working from home, is easier said than done.

It’s not so simple to go to the gym before or after work when you are already at home. And snacking is a real threat – being your own boss basically means that you can eat as much chocolate as you like (and let’s face it, that’s sometimes a lot).

Luckily there is an easy answer to stepping away from the computer, getting in shape and retaining that all-important balance: routine. Without a doubt, scheduling is key.

As a home-based business owner I know just how difficult it can be trying to fit in fitness. So here are a few tips on how I make it work for me.

Weekly exercise classes are in the calendar and are non-negotiable. Also, belonging to a sports team means that I am always committed to turning up rather than letting my teammates down. Besides, keeping fit then becomes secondary to having fun!

When it comes to eating well, I simply don’t keep items in the house that I know I shouldn’t be grazing on. I also can’t get through the week without a meal plan. They not only help you to eat healthier, but are also perfect for time-poor business owners.

It’s sometimes hard to give importance to anything other than your business. Though it’s also worth remembering that you are no good to anybody when you aren’t in top form.

I’d love to know your suggestions on keeping healthy as a business owner. And in the mean time, go easy on the biscuits.

sloppy, or just plain comfortable?

Kind of. Look, I’ll admit it; I have been to known to end up having lunch in my pajamas. But it’s not what you think. It’s not like I can’t be bothered getting dressed for the day, it’s just that time gets away from me sometimes.

I’m up at about 7.30am, and after a bit of breakfast and catching the news, I hop on my computer and check my emails. I then have a look at my Social Media sites and see what’s going on with the business. And of course, before I know it, it’s time for lunch and I haven’t even brushed my teeth. (TMI? Probably.)

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m as professional as they come. But working from home is a whole new ballgame for me, and something that I’m still getting used to. It’s easy just to think, “Well, no one’s going to see me anyway…”

That old 10-step commute allows for such flexibility. And you know, sometimes it’s just practical not to get dressed.

But I think I’ve discovered where the real problem lies…. I’m more productive in the morning. I’ve got the concentrated energy to get things done before the house starts nagging me to do the washing or make the bed.

Fortunately this whole pajama scenario doesn’t happen all too often – I’ve got plenty going on that gets me up, dressed and out of the house most days. And I know the answer is obvious: ROUTINE. Easier said than done though, and that’s coming from someone who loves routine. Self-imposed discipline is a little trickier to master.

But I’ll let you in a little secret… I actually love working in my PJ’s, and it’s all because you can’t.
